Straight Talk On Health Care Reform
Many other countries have some form of universal health care and are their citizens are getting much better health care outcomes than Americans with our insurance dominated health care system for lower total health care expenditures (they're spending less money for more!).
Our current health care reform proposals are just tightening up the rules on insurance companies to stop them from the worst of their abuses of American consumers. This still will not solve the problems inherent in our current for profit health care system but it's much better than leaving the system as is.
We currently have health care rationed by the insurance companies just for the sole benefit of their bottom line. It's understandable that they want to maximize their profits but, unfortunately, they're doing it to the detriment of their customers. people are denied legitimate claims and all too often when the claim is approved, needed tests and treatments are denied by those for profit insurance companies.
What's needed is some kind of universal health care that gets the insurance industry completely out of the health care business. We don't necessarily need government run health care but that's not necessarily bad. The VA health care system is the most cost effective health care in our country. Our veterans (I am one) get free health care paid for by the government. When my primary care Physician orders a test or treatment I get it. No insurance company is involved therefor no insurance company can deny it. Also I won't be forced into bankruptcy by needed health care expenses.
So, should we expand the VA health care system to include everyone? That's one solution but not the only way to get us good health care in this country. A hybrid system that allows us choice in our health care may be much more acceptable to the majority of Americans. But whatever we do, we need to change the current system now. Too many hard working Americans are not getting adequate health care under our current system either due to lack of insurance or insurance being denied or canceled by companies only concerned about their profit.
